A korean vaccine scar, the round dent a BCG or smallpox shot left on the upper arm, is usually treated in Seoul with RF microneedling or fractional laser across several sessions, and most people can fly home the next day. At Delphic the doctor performs the treatment directly and same-day treatment is possible, so the consultation and a first session can share one visit. The worry is the flight: will the arm look raw at the airport, and who checks it once you're home? I'm Dr. Hyunji Kim, Director and Lead Physician at Delphic Clinic in Gangnam.
Patients ask me about the mark on their upper arm more often than you'd guess, and the question is nearly always whether a korean vaccine scar treatment can fit a holiday. Two things make it trip-friendly. The area is small, and a sleeve covers it while it heals. What sets your calendar is the number of sessions and the weeks between them.
The short version:
- Most vaccine scars are sunken (atrophic), which is the type RF microneedling (Potenza) and fractional laser (Fraxel) are designed for.
- Raised or keloid vaccine scars are a separate problem, and microneedling is not advised for keloids.
- Visible redness usually settles within a few days to a week, and flying the next day is usually fine.
- Improvement builds across several sessions spaced weeks apart, so plan the trips, not one long stay.
- At Delphic: same-day treatment, English and Chinese interpreters on site, and Shinnonhyeon Station Exit 3 connected directly to the building.
If you already know your travel dates, send them on WhatsApp together with one clear daylight photo of the scar. With those two things in the message, the 1:1 consultation has your dates and your scar type to work from before you land.

What kind of vaccine scar is on your arm?
Most vaccine scars are sunken, and sunken scars are the ones RF microneedling and fractional laser are meant for. The American Academy of Dermatology explains that depressed scars are treated by prompting the skin to build collagen into the dip, while raised scars come from too much collagen and need different treatment.
Risks and side effects to know
A BCG scar is typically a small round pit on the outer upper arm. Smallpox vaccination scars, which people vaccinated decades ago often carry, tend to be larger, flatter at the base and sometimes paler than the skin around them.
At an exam, a doctor generally looks at four things: depth, the shape of the edge, whether the scar is pulled down to the tissue below, and its color. A scar with sloping edges tends to respond more readily than one with steep walls. A scar that stays put when you stretch the skin around it is often tethered, and that is where subcision, releasing the scar from underneath, enters the conversation. Delphic lists Potenza Pore & Scar, Fraxel and Scar Subcision among its pores-and-scars treatments.
Check yours in daylight before you message anyone:
- Run a fingertip across it. Does it sit below the skin, level with it, or above it?
- Stretch the skin gently around it. Does the dip soften, or stay pulled down?
- Has it grown, itched or thickened over the years?
- Is it paler than the surrounding skin, darker, or the same color?
- Have you ever formed a thick, raised scar after a cut or piercing anywhere else?
The reasoning behind matching treatment to scar shape is the same one I use on faces, explained in planning acne scar treatment scar by scar.
How many days does the arm need after each session?
The AAD's microneedling page describes downtime as minimal, says redness or darkening usually disappears in a few days to a week, and notes people can return to work or school right after.
Fractional laser tends to add a few days of fine flaking compared with RF microneedling, so the device chosen at the exam is part of the calendar too. Visible softening of the dip comes later: the AAD notes improvement may show within a few weeks, while full results usually take several months.
The airport is rarely the problem people fear. By the flight home the arm usually looks mildly sunburned at worst, and it sits under a sleeve. One scheduling detail matters more: Delphic is open Saturday 10:30 to 17:00 and closed on Sundays, so a Saturday session before a Sunday flight leaves no clinic day in between.
If the flight home is what keeps you from booking, send your flight times and the scar photo on WhatsApp. That lets the consultation start from which day of your stay the session lands on and how many of those days the arm will still be pink.

Sessions spaced weeks apart: the trip pattern that works
Plan for a series. Delphic's own scar programs run at 4-week intervals, a 4-session pore and scar program and a 5-session acne-scar program, which reflects the rest skin needs between rounds.
For a traveler, that rhythm leaves three workable patterns:
- One short trip per session, about a month apart. Realistic if you live a few hours' flight from Seoul or visit for work.
- A first session now, then a decision at home once you've seen how your skin responds.
- If you live in Asia, sessions lined up with long weekends a month apart.
Potenza is an RF microneedling device with interchangeable tips; the clinic lists a pore tip (N25) and a pumping tip (CP25), and which one suits a particular scar is settled at the exam. There's more on the device itself in how Potenza treats pores and scars.
Which season should you book?
Autumn or winter, if you have the choice. Sleeves hide the healing arm, the sun is weaker, and a series that starts in October or November can be finished before sleeveless weather arrives.
Sun matters more than most people expect. Healing skin that tans can darken, a reaction called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and DermNet describes it as more common in darker skin types and slow to fade, sometimes over months. Summer trips still work, with sunscreen and a sleeve over the arm for the days afterward.
The other timing mistake is booking straight after a beach holiday. A fresh tan on the arm raises the same pigment risk, so a few weeks between the beach and the session is sensible. If you're shortlisting clinics partly from online reviews, how to read Korean facial reviews before booking covers what a review can and can't tell you about a treatment like this.
When the scar is raised, and when you don't need to come
If the scar is raised, thick or has grown past its original size, microneedling is usually the wrong tool. The AAD lists people who have or have had keloids among those who should not have microneedling, and its acne-scar page notes keloids can be difficult to get rid of, with some returning after treatment. The shoulder and upper arm are known sites for raised scars, so a thickened vaccine scar deserves a dermatologist's look at home before any travel plan.
The AAD also lists people who heal slowly or poorly, those with a weakened immune system and anyone having radiation treatment as poor candidates. Active eczema or an infection on the arm means waiting until it clears.
You don't need to come if:
- the scar doesn't bother you;
- it is flat and only paler than the skin around it, since lost color usually responds less than depth does;
- you need it softened by a fixed date next month, because a series takes months.
Expected effects are redness and mild swelling for a few days, pinpoint marks, and temporary darkening on some skin. Less often there are longer-lasting pigment changes, infection, or a scar that softens less than hoped. How far a scar improves differs from person to person, and whether treatment suits your scar is decided at the in-person exam.
What to sort out the flight
Carry a record of what was done, keep the arm out of the sun, and know who you'd see at home if something looked wrong. The CDC's medical tourism guidance recommends getting copies of your records and arranging follow-up care with a local provider before you travel.
What to pack:
- the treatment name and device (Potenza or Fraxel) written down at the visit
- high-SPF sunscreen and a loose long-sleeved shirt
- a gentle, unscented moisturizer
- your local dermatologist's or family doctor's contact details
Getting to the clinic is short: Delphic is at 476 Gangnam-daero, with Shinnonhyeon Station Exit 3 connected directly to the building. For a sense of what a clinic visit in Seoul looks like from arrival to leaving, see what a clinic session in Seoul involves.

I had a really great experience at Delphic Clinic. The staff were very friendly and made me feel comfortable from the moment I walked in. They explained everything clearly in English and didn’t try to oversell unnecessary treatments, which I really appreciated. The clinic is very clean and modern, and the whole process felt professional and well-organized. Overall, I would definitely recommend this clinic, especially if you’re a foreigner looking for a trustworthy place in Korea.

Frequently asked questions
Can a BCG scar be erased completely?
No treatment makes a vaccine scar disappear. The realistic aim is a shallower, softer mark that blends better with the skin around it, built up over several sessions.
Does RF microneedling on the arm hurt?
A numbing cream is commonly applied beforehand, and most people describe the sensation as prickly warmth. The arm may feel like mild sunburn for the rest of the day.
Will the scar look darker after treatment?
It can for a while, especially on deeper skin tones or if the arm gets sun soon after. This post-inflammatory darkening usually fades, but it can take months, so sunscreen and sleeves matter in the weeks after each session.
My parent has an old smallpox vaccination scar. Is the approach similar?
Often, yes, since most smallpox scars are also depressed. Larger scars may need more sessions, and older skin can heal more slowly, which the exam takes into account. English and Chinese interpreters are on site, which helps if your parent is less comfortable in English.
Can I swim or use a sauna after a session?
Many clinicians suggest skipping pools, hot tubs and saunas for the first few days while the tiny punctures close. Ask about your own aftercare at the visit, since it changes with the device used.
