Korean Acne Scar Treatment: Why I Plan It Scar by Scar, Not Machine by Machine

Several times a week an overseas patient sits down and asks some version of the same thing: which Korean acne scar treatment should I book? Usually they have a screenshot of one device and a strong opinion about it. My answer is almost always the same: your scars are not one problem, so they rarely have one solution. This page explains how I read scars and build a plan around them.

Read your own scars first: a five-minute mirror check

Before any consultation, stand beside a window with light coming from one side and look at your cheeks in a hand mirror. Side light shows depth that ring lights flatten. Then gently stretch the skin between two fingers and watch what happens to each scar.

• Soft, wide dips that flatten a little when you stretch the skin: likely rolling scars
• Dips with sharper, box-like edges that stay visible when stretched: likely boxcar scars
• Small, deep, narrow pits like an enlarged pore: likely ice pick scars
• Flat red or brown marks with no dip at all: not true scars, but post-acne marks
• New spots still appearing every week: the acne needs attention before the scars

Which tool fits which scar in a Korean clinic

Subcision is the one most patients have never heard of, and for rolling scars it is often the missing piece. A fine needle works under the scar to cut the bands pulling it down, so the skin can lift and fill. I describe the procedure and its recovery in detail in my scar subcision guide.

Potenza delivers radiofrequency energy through microneedles into the dermis, which prompts collagen remodelling under shallow scars and enlarged pores. Why one device on repeat usually disappoints

The most common story I hear is five sessions of the same laser with little change. That is rarely the laser's fault. A tethered rolling scar will not rise no matter how much collagen you build around it, because the band underneath keeps pulling it down.

So I often release the tethered scars first, let them settle, and then remodel the surrounding texture. The order matters as much as the tools. Doing it the other way round tends to spend money on the easier part of the problem.

Is Korea a good place for acne scar treatment?

Korea has a mature scar-care culture and a wide range of genuine devices under one roof, which makes combination plans practical in a single clinic. The honest catch is time: scar courses need repeat sessions, and a single trip only starts the process.

It suits you best if you visit Seoul more than once a year, or can stay a few weeks. It suits you less if you want one visit to finish the job. Pricing for a full-face subcision plan depends on how many scars and how large, so here are our real per-lesion prices.

When I would tell you to wait, or not to start

• Active, inflamed acne is still forming new spots each week
• You are taking or have recently finished oral isotretinoin; timing needs discussing first
• You tend to form raised or thickened scars after injury
• You need a finished result before a fixed event in a few weeks
• The marks are flat colour rather than dents, where a scar course would be the wrong tool

None of these is a final no. They are reasons to change the order or the tool, and I would rather tell you that in consultation than take a booking that will not help you.

Questions to paste into your consultation message

• Which scar types do you see on my face, and where?
• Which scars need subcision, and which need a laser or RF microneedling?
• In what order would you do them, and why?
• How many sessions would you expect, and how far apart?
• Who performs subcision: the doctor, or someone else?
• Is the price the same for international patients?

A realistic scar plan across two Seoul trips

1. 1

   Trip one, day one

   Consultation and scar mapping. If you are a candidate, subcision can be done the same day, so the bruising settles while you are still in Seoul.

2. 2

   Trip one, later that week

   Mild swelling and bruising usually ease within about five days. Avoid heavy exercise and saunas while it settles.

3. 3

   Between trips

   Keep acne under control and protect your skin from the sun. The released scars continue to settle over the following weeks.

   Trip two

   We reassess and move to texture work with Potenza or Fraxel, which usually allows a same-day return to normal life.
