The difference behind "russian vs korean lip filler" is placement and amount. The Russian technique puts small vertical deposits of hyaluronic acid filler along the lip to lift the border into a flatter, heart-shaped profile. What people call Korean lip filler usually uses less product to soften the outline and keep the lip in proportion with the rest of the face. If you're flying to Seoul for it, the worry is usually this one: what if the shape looks wrong once the swelling settles, and you're already back home? At Delphic a doctor performs the injection directly, and filler dissolving is on our treatment menu for the moment a hyaluronic acid result needs correcting.
I'm Dr. Hyunji Kim, Director · Lead Physician at Delphic Clinic in Gangnam, with a background at Korea University Medical Center and membership in the Korean Filler Society.
Before you settle on a style, send a photo of your lips on WhatsApp, taken face-on in daylight with your mouth relaxed, along with your travel dates. Add the one question that keeps coming back to you, such as whether your upper lip has enough height for the Russian look.

What does each style actually do to the lip?
Both styles use hyaluronic acid filler. What changes is the injection pattern and the profile it aims for: the Russian technique lifts, while Korean-style lip work tends to soften and balance.
With the Russian technique, the injector places many tiny amounts vertically, from the lip border toward the inside of the lip. The upper lip gains height, the cupid's bow looks sharper, and the lip stays fairly flat from the side instead of pushing forward. It often takes more filler overall, and it is often built over more than one session, because a lip can only take so much at once.
Korean-style lips are less a single technique than a set of preferences. A softer outline, a gentle curve in the middle of the upper lip (often called the M-line), corners that don't turn down, and a volume small enough that the lip still matches the nose and chin.
Neither label is a regulated method with fixed doses, so two injectors can mean different things by the same word. If you ask for one, bring a photo of the shape you like and ask the injector to show you where on your own lip the filler would go.
Which one suits a lip that has thinned with age?
For many people over 40, neither label fits as it is. With age the upper lip tends to lengthen, the border blurs and lines form around the mouth. Filler can restore some support, but a strongly lifted 25-year-old's lip shape on a 50-year-old face often looks stiff when you talk.
The first thing I look at is the cause. If the red part of the upper lip shows less than it used to, a small amount placed to lift the border can help; that is the core idea of the Russian technique, used in a lighter dose. If the lip itself is fine and what bothers you is the fine vertical lines above it, lip filler is the wrong tool, and I explain why fine lines need a different filler from deep folds.
If the skin around the mouth has become thin and crepey, adding volume won't fix its texture. I use the same reasoning around the eyes, where thin skin often does better with a booster than with filler, and a hydrating option such as SkinVive, which adds glow without shaping, can be part of that conversation.
Lips are also judged against the nose and chin. I go through that wider in planning filler around proportion instead of single features, and the lip-specific version is in how I plan a soft lip shape.
The shape on day one and the shape two weeks later
Lips swell more than most areas that receive filler, so the first days don't show the result. For many people swelling is most noticeable over the first two or three days and has largely settled by about two weeks, with bruising possible along the way.
That is why timing on a short trip matters more for lips than for most treatments. If you have it done the evening before your flight, you'll board at peak swelling and judge the result in an airport mirror. Booking it on the first or second day of your stay gives you several days in Seoul to watch it settle. Our weekday hours run until 21:00 and Saturdays until 17:00, and we're closed on Sundays, so check those against your arrival time.
If a Russian-style plan involves building height over several sessions, ask how much will be done on this trip and what your lip will look like if you stop there. Your next session may happen at home, or not at all. I go through the day-by-day changes in my lip filler recovery and aftercare timeline.
What happens if it looks wrong after you fly home?
Hyaluronic acid filler can be broken down with an enzyme, and that is the fallback for both styles. The practical question is who does it when you're ten hours away, so plan for it before you book.
Filler dissolving is on our menu, which means a correction can be made here while you're still in Seoul. Once you're home, the person who handles it is a doctor near you. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises people travelling for medical care to get copies of their records and to arrange follow-up care before they leave. For lip filler, that means asking for the product name and the amount used, so the doctor at home knows exactly what is in your lip.
Uneven lips in the first few days are usually swelling. A small firm bump often softens as the filler settles. A lump still there at three or four weeks, or a shape you clearly dislike once the swelling is gone, is a reason to have it checked rather than to live with it.

4.7 · 260 Google reviewsI received ONDA lifting and Juvelook Skin treatment at Delpic Clinic. Before the procedure, Dr. K carefully examined my skin condition and explained everything in a kind and easy-to-understand way, which made me feel very comfortable and reassured. During the treatment, I could really tell that Dr. K was highly skilled, so I felt confident and at ease throughout the entire process. Overall, I was very satisfied with my experience. It’s definitely a clinic I would love to visit again.
I had a really great experience at Delphic Clinic. The staff were very friendly and made me feel comfortable from the moment I walked in. They explained everything clearly in English and didn’t try to oversell unnecessary treatments, which I really appreciated. The clinic is very clean and modern, and the whole process felt professional and well-organized. Overall, I would definitely recommend this clinic, especially if you’re a foreigner looking for a trustworthy place in Korea.
If you're unsure whether your trip leaves enough days for this, send your arrival and departure dates on WhatsApp with a side-profile photo of your lips. The side view shows how much forward fullness you already have, which is exactly where the two styles differ.

Risks and side effects to know
The common effects are swelling, bruising, tenderness and small lumps, and most fade over days to a couple of weeks. Less common are lumps that persist, asymmetry, and filler spreading above the lip border into a visible ridge, which is more likely when large amounts are added again and again. If you get cold sores, an injection can trigger one, so mention it beforehand.
The rare but serious risk is filler entering a blood vessel. The US Food and Drug Administration warns that this can block blood flow and damage the skin, and in rare cases affect vision. Skin that turns pale or dusky, or pain that gets worse instead of better after the injection, needs urgent medical attention the same day, not after your flight. Results and recovery vary from person to person, and whether filler suits your lip is decided at the in-person exam.
Who shouldn't book lip filler on this trip?
Postpone if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have an active cold sore or any infection around the mouth. Think twice if your stay is only a day or two and ends with an event where you need to look settled.
If you want strong Russian-style height but your upper lip has very little to begin with, one trip probably won't get you there, and it's better to know that before you fly. If the real concern is lines or texture around the mouth, lip filler is the wrong answer, as described above.
Sometimes you don't need to come at all. If an injector at home gave you a shape you like and you only want a top-up, staying with them keeps your records and your follow-up in one place.
Questions to bring to your consultation
Use this as a checklist, here or anywhere else:
- Which style are you planning for my lip, and where exactly will the filler go?
- Which hyaluronic acid product will you use, and how much on this visit?
- What will my lip look like if I never have a second session?
- Which signs after I fly home mean I should see a doctor urgently?
- Can I have the product name and amount written down for my doctor at home?
An injector who answers these plainly is giving you what you need to judge them, and I cover the rest of that judgement in what to look for before you trust an injector.
When you're ready, message us on WhatsApp with a reference photo of the lip shape you like and the question you most want answered first. The 1:1 consultation takes place at the clinic with English and Chinese interpreters on site, in a building directly connected to Exit 3 of Sinnonhyeon Station (Line 9 and Shinbundang Line).
Frequently asked questions
Is the Russian lip technique more painful than other lip filler?
Many hyaluronic acid lip fillers contain a small amount of local anaesthetic, and numbing cream is commonly used before lip injections. The Russian technique uses more small injection points, so some people find it a little more tender during the session.
How long does lip filler last?
Hyaluronic acid filler is gradually absorbed by the body over months. Lips move constantly, so filler there tends to fade sooner than in less mobile areas, and how long it lasts differs between people and products.
Can I switch from Russian lips to a softer Korean shape?
Yes, either by letting the existing hyaluronic acid filler fade or by dissolving part of it with an enzyme and reshaping later. Filler dissolving is on our menu, and the in-person exam decides which route suits your lip.
Can I fly right after lip filler?
Many people fly home within days of lip filler. The bigger issues are travelling at peak swelling and being far from help if a warning sign appears, so leave several days in Seoul between the injection and your flight.
Do I need to speak Korean for the consultation?
No. English and Chinese interpreters are on site at Delphic Clinic for consultations.
