Korean Lip Filler: How I Plan a Soft, Natural Lip Shape — A Gangnam Doctor's View

I'm Dr. Hyunji Kim, director and lead physician at Delphic Clinic in Gangnam, one minute from Sinnonhyeon Station. I trained at Korea University Medical Center, I am a member of the Korean Filler Society and the Korean Academy of Aesthetic Surgery & Laser Medicine, and my work centres on lifting, laser and anti-ageing care. Korean lip filler is one of the injectable treatments I plan and inject myself.

Several times a week an international patient sits down and asks for Korean lip filler, often holding a photo from social media. What they usually mean is not bigger lips. They mean lips that look soft, hydrated and a little more defined, but still recognisably theirs. This page is how I turn that wish into a plan.

What people mean by a 'Korean' lip look

When I translate the photos patients show me, the same features come up. A smooth, hydrated surface. A soft border rather than a sharp, drawn line. A gentle curve in the centre of the upper lip. And proportions that stay close to what the face already has.

What is usually missing is dramatic projection. That matters, because it changes how much filler you need, and often it is less than people expect. It also means the result can look natural even at a business meeting the day you fly home, once the early swelling settles.

Photos to bring, and photos to leave at home

Reference photos help, but only some of them. Here is what I find useful in consultation, and what tends to mislead both of us.

How I read your lips before choosing a product

I look at the ratio of upper to lower lip, how much the lips show when you smile, any asymmetry, and fine lines around the mouth. I also ask what you do not want, which is often more telling than what you do want.

Lips I would not inject this week

Saying no is part of my job. These are the situations where I postpone or decline lip filler, even for a patient who has flown in for it.

• An active cold sore or infection on or around the lips.
• Pregnancy or breastfeeding.
• A wedding, shoot or big meeting within the next day or two. Swelling needs time.
• Lips that already hold a lot of filler from previous treatments. We assess or dissolve first.
• A goal that needs more volume than your lips can carry without looking stretched.

The first 72 hours after Korean lip filler

Expect lips to look fuller and slightly uneven at first, sometimes with small bruises. Most of that is swelling, and the shape you will live with appears once it settles. I ask patients to avoid pressing or massaging the lips unless I have asked them to.

If you don't like it: dissolving, and why I start small

Hyaluronic acid filler is reversible. If a result does not suit you, a dissolving injection can break it down, and we offer that per area. Knowing that makes the first appointment much less stressful.

Still, dissolving is a correction, not a plan. I would much rather place a modest amount, let you live with it, and add a little at a later visit if you want more. How the amount affects what you pay is covered in my note on what a lip filler price in Seoul actually covers.
