Korean Melasma Treatment: Why Seoul Doctors Go Low and Slow, and What That Means for You

I'm Dr. Hyunji Kim, director of Delphic Clinic in Gangnam, by Sinnonhyeon Station. I trained through Korea University Medical Center and am a member of the Korean Society for Laser Dermatology & Hair, among other Korean aesthetic societies. Laser, lifting and anti-ageing care are my daily work, and Korean melasma treatment is one of the areas where patience matters more than power.
I hear the phrase Korean melasma treatment most often from women who have already tried something strong at home, watched their patches lighten, and then watched them return darker. They come to Seoul hoping for a stronger machine. What they usually need is the opposite, and this page explains why, and how that plan fits around real travel.
First, make sure it really is melasma
Several brown conditions look alike in a phone photo. Getting this wrong is the most expensive mistake in pigment treatment, because what lightens freckles can darken melasma. Check your own patches against this list.
- Patches, not dots, with soft blurry edges
- Roughly symmetrical on both cheeks, the forehead or the upper lip
- Darker after summer, holidays or a period of hormonal change
- Lighter in winter, but never quite gone
- Worse after saunas, hot yoga or strong peels
If most of these fit, melasma is likely. If you are seeing small, sharply defined dots instead, my guide on freckles vs melasma explains the difference and why it changes everything.
Why the Korean approach avoids strong heat
Pigment cells in melasma-prone skin are easily provoked. Heat, friction and inflammation all tell them to produce more. A strong laser can break up pigment in the short term and trigger more of it in the weeks that follow.
So the Korean method works in two directions at once. Low-energy toning gently breaks down existing pigment, and treatments that calm the pigment signal reduce how much new pigment forms. Neither alone is as steady as both together.
With melasma, the treatment that looks impressive in week one is often the one you regret in week six. I choose the one you will still be glad of in month six.— Dr. Hyunji Kim, Delphic Clinic
The two tools I combine for melasma
PicoSure toning is also used for other pigment concerns, and I describe how a session feels in my PicoSure toning guide. For melasma specifically, I keep the energy deliberately low and the sessions regular.

Who I would not start on this plan yet
- Pregnant or breastfeeding patients, who are better off waiting
- Anyone with a history of blood clots, before we have discussed tranexamic acid in detail
- People who cannot commit to daily sunscreen, because the plan will not hold
- Skin that is currently irritated from strong peels or retinoids
- Anyone expecting one visit to finish the job before a fixed date
These are not judgements. They are the situations where the same money would be spent with a much smaller return, and I would rather tell you before you book.
Your daily melasma rules between Seoul visits
What you do at home between sessions decides whether the progress holds. These are the rules I give every melasma patient, and they are worth printing.
- Broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning, reapplied when outdoors, even on cloudy days
- A hat and shade on bright days; windows and car journeys count
- No scrubbing, no harsh peels, no rubbing the patches
- Avoid saunas and very hot rooms where possible
- Tell me about hormonal changes, including starting or stopping the pill
A melasma plan built around repeat trips
- 1
First visit
Consultation to confirm the diagnosis, then the first injection and toning session if suitable. Both allow a same-day return to normal plans.
- 2
Rest of that trip
If your stay is long enough, a second toning session can be added. Sun protection starts that day.
- 3
Between visits
Daily sun protection and gentle skincare. Take photos in the same light every two weeks to track change.
- 4
Later visits
We review your photos, adjust energy and frequency, and move towards maintenance once the patches are lighter.

If some of your pigment is sun damage rather than melasma, a different laser may be appropriate for those spots. I explain when Fraxel is and is not used for pigment in my guide to Fraxel for hyperpigmentation.

I had a really great experience at Delphic Clinic. The staff were very friendly and made me feel comfortable from the moment I walked in. They explained everything clearly in English and didn’t try to oversell unnecessary treatments, which I really appreciated. The clinic is very clean and modern, and the whole process felt professional and well-organized. Overall, I would definitely recommend this clinic, especially if you’re a foreigner looking for a trustworthy place in Korea.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Korean approach to melasma treatment?
It usually combines low-energy laser toning, such as PicoSure toning, with treatments that calm pigment production, such as melasma injections containing tranexamic acid and PDRN. The aim is to lighten pigment gradually without heating the skin so much that melasma flares.
Will melasma go away for good after treatment in Korea?
Melasma is a chronic tendency rather than a one-time problem. Treatment can lighten it considerably and keep it controlled, but sun, hormones and heat can bring it back, so maintenance and sun protection matter.
How many sessions of melasma treatment will I need?
Most people need a series of sessions over weeks to months. I plan the number after examining the pigment and seeing how your skin responds to the first sessions.
Why can strong laser make melasma worse?
Melasma-prone skin reacts to heat and inflammation by making more pigment. Aggressive settings can leave darker patches, which is why Korean clinics favour gentle, repeated toning.
Is it melasma or freckles?
Melasma usually appears as symmetrical, blurry-edged patches on the cheeks, forehead or upper lip, while freckles are small, distinct dots. The difference changes the treatment, so a doctor should confirm it.
