Korean Microneedling: What It Really Means on a Seoul Clinic Menu, From a Gangnam Doctor

I'm Dr. Hyunji Kim, director of Delphic Clinic in Gangnam, near Sinnonhyeon Station. My background is Korea University Medical Center, and I am a member of several Korean societies for aesthetic laser medicine, laser dermatology and filler. Most of my work is lifting, laser and anti-ageing care, and Korean microneedling is something I plan and perform myself most days of the week.

Patients from abroad often ask for Korean microneedling as if it were one fixed treatment. When I ask what they mean, I hear derma pens, gold needles, exosome facials and RF devices, all under the same name. This page untangles what Korean microneedling actually refers to in a Seoul clinic, so you can ask for the right thing.

Three things sold as microneedling in Seoul

Why Korean clinics favour RF microneedling

The needles are only the delivery system. The change in pores and texture comes from controlled heat in the dermis, which prompts the skin to build new collagen. An RF device lets me choose depth and energy for each zone of the face rather than using one setting everywhere.

Quick quiz: is Korean microneedling what your skin is asking for?

Answer these honestly before you book. More yes answers in the first group suggest microneedling is a reasonable starting point; any yes in the second group means we should talk about something else first.

• Group A: my pores look larger than they used to, especially on the cheeks
• Group A: my skin looks rough or uneven in daylight
• Group A: I have shallow acne scars that soften when I stretch the skin
• Group B: my main concern is flat brown patches, especially on the cheekbones
• Group B: I still get painful new breakouts every week
• Group B: my main concern is sagging along the jawline rather than texture

Flat brown patches are usually a pigment question, not a texture one, and sagging is a lifting question. Microneedling is a good tool, but only for the problem it was built for.

Who I steer away from microneedling

• Active, inflamed acne across the treatment area
• Melasma that flares easily with heat, where gentler pigment care comes first
• A skin infection, open wound or cold sore in the area
• Anyone who tends to form raised scars
• Pregnancy, or a medical condition your doctor has asked you to discuss first

Where Korean microneedling sits in a skin plan

Three messages to send a clinic before you fly

• Is your microneedling a plain needle treatment or RF microneedling, and which device?
• Will a doctor choose the depth and tip for each area of my face?
• Based on my photos and concerns, is microneedling the right first step, or would you start elsewhere?

Fitting it into a short trip

   Consultation and, if suitable, same-day treatment. Leave the rest of the day free.

   The next few days

   Expect some redness and a slightly rough feel. Use gentle skincare and sunscreen, and skip saunas and hard workouts.

   Before you fly home

   Most people are comfortable travelling. Keep your skin moisturised on the flight.

   Weeks afterwards

   Texture improves gradually as collagen remodels. Judge the change over weeks, not days.
