Can I Shower After Mole Removal? Yes, and Here Is How to Wash Around the Spot, From the Doctor Who Removed It

"Can I shower after mole removal?" is the question patients ask me as they stand up from the treatment bed, often before they have even looked in the mirror. The short answer is yes: you can shower tonight. What needs care is not the shower but the small treated spot, and this page is exactly what I tell patients at that moment, written down so you can read it again in your hotel.

The short answer, spot by spot

Where the mole was changes the practical details more than people expect. A spot on the back is easy to keep out of the spray; a spot at the hairline gets shampoo running over it every time you wash your hair.

How to wash around a fresh mole site

   Use lukewarm water

   Hot water increases redness and makes a fresh spot sting.

   Keep the spray off the spot

   Let water run over it briefly rather than aiming the shower head at it.

   Cleanse around, not over

   Use a gentle cleanser on the surrounding skin with your fingertips. Skip soap, acids and scrubs on the spot itself.

   Pat, don't rub

   Press a clean towel gently against the area. A tissue works well for small facial spots.

   Re-dress as instructed

   Apply any ointment or dressing exactly as you were shown at the clinic.

Saunas, pools and the questions after the shower question

Once patients hear yes to showering, the next questions are about Seoul itself: the jjimjilbang, the hotel pool, a trip to the beach in Busan. My answer is to wait until the spot has healed. Long heat, steam and pool or sea water are much harder on a fresh wound than a five-minute shower.

Recovery after laser mole removal usually takes three to seven days, depending on the size and depth of each spot. Before you leave, I tell you which of your spots are likely to settle quickly and which need longer. • Makeup: keep it off the spot until it has healed; you can wear it on the rest of your face.
• Sun: cover the spot or keep it shaded. Fresh skin marks easily in strong sun.
• Exercise: light walking is fine; avoid heavy sweating directly over the spot while it is open.
• Scabs: let them come away on their own. Picking them early is the most common reason a spot heals less neatly.

Signs in the mirror that mean message us

Mild redness and a small scab are part of normal healing. What I want to hear about is a spot that gets worse instead of better after the first days.

• Pain that is increasing rather than fading
• Swelling, heat or spreading redness around the spot
• Yellow discharge or an unpleasant smell
• A spot that has not started to close when the others have

A Seoul hotel routine you can copy

Save this to your phone. It is the whole routine for the healing days, and it fits any hotel bathroom.

• Morning: lukewarm shower, spray kept off the spot, pat dry, ointment or dressing as shown.
• Going out: cover or shade the spot; sunscreen on the surrounding skin.
• Evening: gentle cleanse around the spot with fingertips, pat dry, re-dress.
• Skip until healed: sauna, jjimjilbang, pool, sea, face scrubs and exfoliating pads.
• Anything odd: photo in daylight, message the clinic.

When I would ask you to wait before removal

Sometimes the right aftercare advice is to move the removal itself. If you are flying to a beach holiday the next day, have a wedding shoot in two days, or your skin is sunburnt from the trip, I will usually suggest a different day or a smaller number of spots. And a mole that has recently changed, bled or itched is not one I would laser; it needs proper assessment first.
