Korean Facial Hair Removal: A Zone-by-Zone Map of the Face, for Women and Men, From a Gangnam Doctor

I'm Dr. Hyunji Kim, director and lead physician at Delphic Clinic in Gangnam, one minute from Sinnonhyeon Station. Korean facial hair removal confuses many international patients the moment they open a clinic menu. Instead of "face", they find a list of small zones: upper lip, M-line forehead, sideburns, glabella, jawline, upper neck. I hear "which of these do I actually need?" almost daily, so here is the map I draw for patients in the consultation room.

Why Korean facial hair removal is sold by zone

Facial hair is rarely spread evenly. One patient is bothered only by a dark upper lip; another wants a cleaner hairline for photos; a man may want his beard line tidied without losing the beard. Zone pricing lets each of them pay for exactly that, instead of a full-face package they don't need.

A zone map for women: from upper lip to hairline

Hairline work is a design decision as much as a hair removal one. I mark the new line with you in the mirror before the first pulse, because a hairline that is taken too far back cannot be put forward again.

A zone map for men: beard areas and the upper neck

Men usually come for one of three reasons: shaving rash and ingrown hairs, a beard shadow that returns by the afternoon, or a double-chin area where hair makes the neck look heavier. The zones follow the beard: upper lip, chin, glabella, cheeks, the front and upper neck, or combinations of these up to a full face.

Beard hair is thick and dense, so expect gradual thinning rather than a clear change after one session. Many men choose to shape the beard line and treat the neck while keeping the beard itself, which is a sensible middle ground.

Pick your zones: a three-question self-check

   Which hairs would you remove with tweezers today?

   Those zones are your priority. Start there, not with a full face.

   Are those hairs dark, or fine and light?

   Dark hairs are good laser targets. Very fine, blonde or grey hairs usually respond poorly, and I may suggest leaving them.

   How often can you be in Seoul?

   If you can return every few weeks, a five-session package makes sense. If not, choose fewer zones and treat them well.

Peach fuzz, grey hairs and other times I say no

• Very fine, pale facial hair. Laser needs pigment to work, so the result would not justify the cost.
• Grey or white hairs. For the same reason, they are poor laser targets.
• Freshly tanned or sunburnt skin from your trip. We wait until it settles to lower the risk of irritation and pigment change.
• Sudden new facial hair growth. That can have a hormonal cause worth checking with your own doctor before treating the hair.

What the days after a session look like

Each facial zone takes about five to ten minutes. Strong cooling keeps it comfortable, and most people feel a quick warm snap. Afterwards some warmth and redness is normal, and it usually settles within a few days.

Keep treated skin out of strong sun and wear sunscreen, avoid hot saunas on the day, and don't pluck or wax between sessions, because the laser needs the hair root in place. Shaving between sessions is fine.
