So a course of several sessions, spaced weeks apart, gives the laser a chance to reach follicles that were resting last time. Men's beard versus women's facial hair: different expectations

• Women's upper lip, chin, jawline and sideburns: usually fine or moderate hair, short sessions, gradual thinning
• Men's upper lip and chin: dense, coarse hair that responds well to laser but often needs patience
• Men who want to thin the beard rather than clear it: a common and reasonable goal, which we plan for
• Ingrown hairs and razor bumps: often improve as hair becomes finer and sparser

When I would not start laser hair removal

• Your hair is mostly blonde, grey, white or red
• You have a fresh tan or sunburn on the area
• You have an active rash, infection or open wound there
• You waxed or plucked recently, leaving no follicle to target
• You expect one visit to give a lasting result

Your pre-appointment checklist

   Several weeks before

   Stop waxing, threading and plucking. Shaving is fine, because it leaves the root in place.

   The week before

   Avoid tanning and strong exfoliating products on the area.

   The day before

   Shave the area cleanly. Short stubble helps the laser; long hair on the surface wastes energy and can feel hotter.

   On the day

   Arrive without makeup, lotion or deodorant on the treatment area.

   Afterwards

   Some warmth, stinging and redness are common and usually settle within a few days. Use sunscreen and skip saunas for a short while.

Fitting the sessions into your life abroad
