First HIFU Treatment: What to Expect in the Chair and in the Weeks After — Notes Beside Haliun's First Lift
Haliun (@h.lynn.n) tried a skin-lifting device for the first time and didn't name it. Her doctor walks through what a first HIFU session usually feels like, how long it takes, and when change actually shows.

“Will it hurt, and will I see anything when I sit up?” Nearly every first-time lifting patient asks me one of those two things before the handpiece touches their skin. I'm Dr. Hyunji Kim, director of Delphic Clinic by Sinnonhyeon Station in Gangnam. I trained at Korea University Medical Center, and I consult and treat our international patients myself. Haliun (@h.lynn.n) posted about trying a skin-lifting device for the first time, but her post doesn't name the device, so I won't describe her session. Instead, this page answers what a first HIFU treatment is usually like — the sensation, the time in the chair, and what to expect the same day versus weeks later.

What Haliun's video tells us, and what it doesn't
If you're searching for what to expect at a first HIFU treatment, you're probably where Haliun was: curious, a little nervous, and unsure what the session involves. Her caption says only that it was her first time on a skin-lifting device. It doesn't say which one.
In her earlier case I explained how I choose a first device between ultrasound and radiofrequency. This page picks up one step later: you've chosen HIFU, and you want to know what the hour at the clinic is actually like.
First HIFU treatment: what to expect, step by step
- 1
Consultation first
I look at where the skin has loosened and how thick it is, then decide the areas and shot count. If HIFU isn't the right start, I'll say so here.
- 2
Cleansing and gel
Makeup comes off, and a cool gel goes on so the ultrasound can travel into the skin.
- 3
The passes
Shurink Universe uses different cartridges for different depths. The treatment itself usually takes about 15–20 minutes for a face.
- 4
Straight after
Gel is wiped off and you can wash your face and put makeup back on the same day, using a gentle cleanser.
The device has seven cartridges and a pen-type handpiece for curved areas and around the eyes. It can also work in both directions, which shortens the session. For a first-timer, that mostly means less time lying still.
Does HIFU hurt the first time?
Most people describe warmth and short, deep prickles that come and go with each pass. It is not nothing, and I won't pretend it is. How strong it feels depends on the area and on you.
- Over bone — the jawline and near the cheekbones — it tends to feel sharper.
- Over softer cheek tissue it usually feels milder and warmer.
- Around the eyes I use a finer handpiece and lower settings.
- If it's too much, tell me. I can adjust the depth or pace as we go.
If you know you're sensitive, read how I plan a lifting session around pain tolerance before you book. It changes which device and settings I start with.
Right after versus weeks later: when do HIFU results show?
Some patients feel a light tightness when they sit up. That's real, but it isn't the result. HIFU works by heating deeper layers so the tissue contracts and collagen renews, and that renewal takes weeks.
So I ask first-timers not to judge in the mirror that evening. Take a photo before, then compare in the same light after several weeks. If we plan a second session, it usually comes 4–6 weeks later.
How much is a first HIFU session here?
These are example menu prices, not what Haliun paid. A 300-shot first-visit session is the usual starting point for a full face; 100-shot options suit a smaller area or the eyes.
- KakaoTalk friend Shrink Universe Line Type 300 shots (First-visit trial)₩79,000≈ $60
- Shurink Universe Line Type 100 shots₩40,000≈ $30
- Shurink Universe Eye Lifting 100 shots₩69,000≈ $50
Example menu prices for a first HIFU session — not what Haliun paid, since her post names no device. VAT excluded · the same price for Korean and international patients · the shot count and areas are set at the free consultation.
Who shouldn't book a first HIFU session yet
- Your skin is very thin with little to lift, and the concern is mainly texture or tone.
- The sagging is heavy enough that a device would only nibble at it — I'd talk about other options first.
- Your face is mostly full rather than loose; a fat-focused treatment may suit better.
- You're pregnant, or you have an active skin infection or irritation in the area.
Fitting a first HIFU session into a Seoul trip
- 1
Book the consultation early in your stay
The consultation is free and 1:1, and same-day treatment is possible if it suits you.
- 2
First three days
Wash with lukewarm water to keep the heat in the deeper layers. Use sunscreen and moisturiser.
- 3
First week
Skip strenuous exercise, alcohol and saunas.
- 4
Getting here
We're by Exit 3 of Sinnonhyeon Station. English and Chinese interpreters are on site.
For the device details, my longer Shrink HIFU guide for first-timers covers depths, cartridges and how it compares with other lifting options.
Is this for you?
Who this combination genuinely suits
Signs it may be time
- You keep reading about HIFU but don't know how it actually feels
- Your jawline looks softer in photos than it used to
- You want to start small before committing to anything bigger
- You only have a few days in Seoul
A good fit if
- You've never had a lifting device and want to know what you're signing up for
- Your skin has started to loosen along the jaw or cheeks
- You want a short session with same-day return
- You're willing to wait a few weeks to judge the change
Not the right first step if: your main concern is texture or pigment rather than looseness, your sagging is advanced, your face is mainly full rather than loose, or you're pregnant or have irritated or infected skin in the area.

“A first session should answer your questions, not raise new ones. Ask me anything at the consultation — including whether you need HIFU at all.”
Questions patients ask me about this
What should I expect at my first HIFU treatment?
A consultation, cleansing, cool gel, then about 15–20 minutes of passes with the handpiece for a face. You can wash and wear makeup the same day, and most people go straight back to their plans.
Does HIFU hurt the first time?
Most people feel warmth and short, deep prickles, stronger over bony areas like the jawline. The doctor can adjust depth and pace if it feels like too much.
Will I see results right after one HIFU session?
Some people feel slight tightness straight away, but the real change builds over the following weeks as collagen renews. Compare photos taken in the same light after several weeks.
What should I avoid after HIFU?
For three days, wash with lukewarm water. For a week, avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol and saunas, and use sunscreen and moisturiser daily.
How much does a first HIFU session cost at Delphic Clinic?
On the example menu, Shurink Universe 300 shots is ₩79,000 as a first-visit price, and 100-shot options range from ₩40,000 to ₩69,000, VAT excluded. International patients pay the same as Korean patients.
