Korean Facial: Clinic Facial vs Spa Facial in Seoul, From a Doctor Who Runs One

The question 'can I get a Korean facial here?' reaches our front desk almost every day, often from someone who has just walked past three spas on the same street. What most visitors do not realise is that a Korean facial in a clinic and a Korean facial in a spa are different services. This page explains the difference so you book the one you actually want.

Two very different rooms both called a Korean facial

Walk into a spa and you are buying time: warm towels, massage, a sheet mask and a nap. Walk into a clinic and you are buying a result: fewer blackheads, calmer cheeks, smoother texture. Both have value, and both are sold under the same two words.

What happens on the treatment bed, minute by minute

   A short skin check

   I look at your pores, redness, dryness and any breakouts. This takes a few minutes and decides everything that follows.

   Cleanse and peel

   For congested skin I use Aqua Peel, which lifts debris and sebum from pores with AHA and BHA solutions. For rough texture or mild breakouts, LHALALA Peel is often the better fit.

   Soothe

   Many patients add LDM, a high-density ultrasound step set to hydration, acne or redness mode.

   Finish

   A modeling mask calms and seals the skin. You leave without redness in most cases, ready for dinner.

Aqua Peel, LHALALA Peel or a package: matching the menu to your skin

Clinic menus in Seoul can look long, but for a facial the choice usually narrows to three. Here is how I pick between them.

LHALALA Peel combines LHA with patented alkaline components. I use it to help texture, sebum and mild breakouts, and to encourage gentle turnover. Like Aqua Peel, most people return to their day straight away.

Signs your skin needs a spa, not a clinic

I say this to patients often, and I mean it. If your skin is healthy and what you really want is an hour off your feet, a good spa will serve you better than my treatment room.

• You have no particular skin concern and want to relax after a long flight.
• You want a long massage as part of the experience.
• Your skin reacted to a peel or strong active ingredient recently. Let it settle first.
• You have a sunburn from the beach days before Seoul. Wait a few days, then come.

Words on a Seoul menu that confuse visitors

• Extraction: manual clearing of comedones. At Delphic it is priced separately from the first-visit Aqua Peel trial, so check what your option includes.
• Modeling mask: a rubbery mask that sets on the face to calm and seal the skin after a peel.
• LED: a light step used at the end of some sessions. Some Aqua Peel options include it.
• First-visit trial: a one-time introductory price. It is not a discount you can repeat.

Booking a Korean facial around sightseeing

Because there is no real downtime, a clinic facial slots into almost any day. My suggestion is to book it early in your trip if you want to see how your skin responds, or the day before a special dinner if you want the glow at its peak.
