Korean HydraFacial Side Effects: What's Normal and What Isn't

I'm Dr. Hyunji Kim, director of Delphic Clinic in Sinnonhyeon, Gangnam. This is a gentle treatment, which is exactly why the questions about it arrive after the fact — someone has had one, something happened, and now they are worried.

Most of what people describe is ordinary and expected. A small part of it is not. Here is where I draw the line, and who I would tell to skip it entirely.

What is expected

Before the list, one framing that helps: this treatment removes things from the skin rather than putting energy into it. Most of what follows is the skin reacting to having been cleared out, not to having been injured.

• Redness and a warm flushed feeling — usually gone within a few hours.
• Skin that feels slightly tight or squeaky immediately afterwards.
• Small spots appearing over the following days as congestion surfaces.
• Mild sensitivity to actives for a day or two — pause retinoids and acids.

The breakout is the part that alarms people, because it looks like the treatment caused acne. Extraction brings what was already sitting under the surface to the top. It settles.

Telling a purge from a reaction

When to contact the clinic

These are uncommon. I list them because people who recognise them early do far better than people who spend two weeks hoping it resolves on its own.

• Redness with heat and tenderness lasting beyond a day.
• Spots spreading well outside the treated area.
• Anything still worsening after a week.
• Burning or stinging that continues after the session.

The same principle applies as with any treatment: an ordinary reaction improves each day. Something that gets worse on day three is a reason to be seen, not a reason to wait.

Who I would tell to wait

Saying wait is not the same as saying no. In most of these cases the treatment is fine in a few weeks, once whatever is going on has settled. The mistake is booking around a date rather than around your skin.

   Active inflamed acne

   Treat the acne first. Suction over inflamed lesions can spread irritation.

   Broken skin or an active infection

   Straightforward — not until it has healed.

   An event within a few days

   Because of the possible purge. Allow more time, not less.

   Recent strong sun exposure

   Exfoliating recently burnt skin is asking for uneven pigment.
