Korean PLLA Filler: What a Collagen Stimulator Can Do That HA Filler Can't, and Where It Falls Short

I'm Dr. Hyunji Kim, director and lead physician at Delphic Clinic in Gangnam, one minute from Sinnonhyeon Station. I trained at Korea University Medical Center and I am a member of the Korean Filler Society and the Korean Academy of Aesthetic Surgery & Laser Medicine, among other societies. My daily work is lifting, laser and anti-ageing care, and injectables such as Korean PLLA filler are a large part of it.
“Korean PLLA filler” is a phrase I hear from overseas patients almost every week, usually typed into a message before they have decided anything. Most people assume it is a longer-lasting version of normal filler. It isn't quite that, and the difference changes who should book it, so this page is my plain answer.
Why “PLLA filler” is a slightly misleading name
Polylactic acid is a biodegradable material that the body breaks down slowly. In products like Juvelook it is combined with hyaluronic acid, and the aim is for your own tissue to respond by building collagen. That is a different job from filling a space with gel.
Patients who expect filler-style volume on the day are often disappointed, not because the treatment failed but because it was never designed to do that. When someone tells me they want “PLLA filler”, my first question is what they hope to see in the mirror. The answer usually decides the product for us.
Volume today or collagen over months: the core trade-off
The reversibility row matters more than people think. If an HA filler result is not what you wanted, a hyaluronidase injection can dissolve it, and we offer that. A collagen response cannot be switched off in the same way, which is one reason I am conservative with amounts.
If you are still deciding between areas and products for classic HA filler, I've laid out which areas, which products and how much filler I usually use in a separate guide.
A quick self-check: is your problem shape or skin quality?
Stand by a window, look straight into a mirror, then turn to each side. Answer these honestly before you message any clinic.
- Do I see a clear hollow or a missing angle, such as a flat chin or sunken temple? That points to HA filler.
- Does my skin look thin, crepey or dull even where the shape is fine? That points to a collagen stimulator.
- Do I have visible pores and uneven texture across the cheeks? A collagen booster can help, sometimes alongside a laser.
- Do I need the change for an event next week? Then a slow collagen treatment is the wrong timing.
Juvelook and Ultracol: the PLA options I actually use
At Delphic the two PLA-based boosters are Juvelook and Ultracol, and Juvelook is approved by Korea's MFDS. Both are used for tone, pores, texture and general anti-ageing support. Under the eyes I use only Ultracol, because that skin is thin and needs a gentler product choice.
How the two compare, and what the first weeks usually look like, is covered in my Juvelook and Ultracol guide. Here I only want you to know they are skin-quality treatments first.
Choose the tool for the problem you can see, not for the word you searched.— Dr. Hyunji Kim, Delphic Clinic
Faces I would steer away from a collagen stimulator
- Someone whose main concern is a deep hollow, such as the temples, where HA filler gives a more predictable change
- Anyone who needs a visible result within a few days
- Skin with active inflammation or infection in the area we would treat
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding, where I prefer to wait
- Anyone hoping one session will replace surgery for heavy sagging
For hollow temples in particular, I explain my filler approach in a guide to temple filler in Korea. It is a good example of a problem that a collagen stimulator handles poorly on its own.

The next few days
Allow one to three days for small bumps or redness to settle before important photos or meetings.

Frequently asked questions
Is Korean PLLA filler the same as hyaluronic acid filler?
No. Hyaluronic acid filler adds volume the moment it is placed. A PLA collagen stimulator such as Juvelook works more slowly, by prompting your own skin to build collagen, so the change is gradual and mostly about skin quality rather than shape.
How soon will I see a difference after a PLA collagen booster?
Some fullness from the injected fluid shows early and settles within days. The collagen effect builds gradually over the following weeks to months, which is why I describe it as a slow treatment rather than an instant one.
Can PLA collagen boosters be used under the eyes?
At Delphic the under-eye area is treated only with Ultracol, not Juvelook. The skin there is thin, so the product choice and the amount are decided after I examine you.
Who should choose HA filler instead of a PLA stimulator?
If you need a defined change in shape, such as a flatter chin or a hollow temple, HA filler is usually the more direct tool. A collagen stimulator is better suited to thin, crepey or tired-looking skin over a reasonably structured face.
What is the recovery after Juvelook in Korea?
Our clinic record lists one to three days of recovery. Small bumps, swelling or redness at injection points are common at first and usually settle within that window.
