I'm Dr. Hyunji Kim, director of Delphic Clinic in Gangnam, near Sinnonhyeon Station. I trained through Korea University Medical Center and I'm a member of the Korean Academy of Aesthetic Surgery & Laser Medicine, the Korean Society for Laser Dermatology & Hair and the Korean Filler Society, among others. My work centres on lifting, laser and anti-aging, and I perform mole removals myself, so I also follow every mole removal scar as it heals afterwards.
The mole removal scar question is usually the last thing a patient asks before they agree to treatment, and often the first thing they message me about a week later. Sometimes they are worried about a pink spot that is completely normal; occasionally they are describing something I want to see. This post explains why a mark forms, what you can do to keep it small, what a normal timeline looks like, and when to come back.
If you have not yet decided which moles are worth removing, start with my guide to which moles suit a trip, because the choice of mole affects the scar more than anything you do afterwards. This post assumes the decision is made and focuses on the mark.
Why any removal leaves a mark for a while
Removing a mole means removing cells from within the skin, and skin repairs that space the way it repairs any small wound. First comes a crust, then fresh pink skin underneath, and then a slow phase where colour and texture settle. That repair is what people call a scar, and in many cases it becomes very faint over time.
The Avvio laser I use is chosen because it lets me control depth precisely and limit heat to the surrounding skin. That helps keep the mark small, but it cannot skip the healing biology. Anyone who promises no mark at all is not describing how skin works.
Depth, location, skin type and your hands: four scar factors
If your mole is raised rather than flat, the depth question becomes the heart of the decision. I discuss that trade-off with each patient before treatment, because removing too shallowly can mean regrowth while removing too deeply can mean a dent.
The size of the final mark is decided twice: once by how I remove the mole, and once by what your fingers do in the following week.— Dr. Hyunji Kim, Delphic Clinic
Week one to month six: what a normal mark does
- 1
Days 1 to 3
The site is slightly raw or covered with a thin film or dressing. Mild redness around it is expected.
- 2
Days 3 to 7
A small crust forms and then lifts on its own. Most small sites close in this window.
- 3
Weeks 2 to 8
The new skin is pink and may look slightly shiny or a touch darker. This is the stage that worries people most, and it is usually normal.
- 4
Months 2 to 6
Colour fades gradually and the texture settles. Body sites often take longer than the face.

If you want to see this stage described honestly, without filtered photos, my post on the healing nobody photographs walks through it in more detail.
Normal pink mark or a problem? A mirror checklist
- Usually normal: a small pink or light brown spot that is slowly getting lighter week by week.
- Usually normal: slight shininess or a tiny step at the edge that softens over months.
- Message us: redness that is spreading, warmth, swelling, increasing pain or pus.
- Message us: bleeding that does not stop with gentle pressure.
- Message us: colour that reappears inside the mark months later, or a raised, thickening scar that keeps growing.
Habits that make a mole removal scar worse
Picking the crust early is the most common one, because it reopens the wound and restarts healing. Strong sun on fresh pink skin is the second, as it can leave a darker mark that lasts longer. Friction from straps, collars or a mask edge, and soaking in saunas or pools too early, round out the list.
Showering is generally fine with care, and I explained exactly how in my guide on whether you can shower after mole removal. When in doubt, keep it clean, keep it covered as advised, and keep your hands off it.
If an older removal already left a small dent
Some patients come to me with a dent or uneven patch from a removal done years ago. Depending on its depth and size, options such as Fraxel for texture or subcision for a tethered, pitted mark may be worth discussing. These are separate treatments with their own healing time, and I decide whether they are worthwhile only after examining the scar.
Who should not book mole removal right now
- Anyone whose mole is changing, bleeding or irregular and has not been evaluated. Evaluation comes before a scar conversation.
- People flying home within a day or two with no way to protect the site from friction.
- Anyone planning a beach holiday straight after, with strong sun on fresh marks.
- People who know they tend to form thick, raised scars, unless we have discussed that risk carefully first.

I had a really great experience at Delphic Clinic. The staff were very friendly and made me feel comfortable from the moment I walked in. They explained everything clearly in English and didn’t try to oversell unnecessary treatments, which I really appreciated. Frequently asked questions
Does mole removal always leave a scar?
Any removal leaves a healing mark at first, usually a small pink or slightly shiny spot. In many people it fades over months until it is hard to find, but how it ends up depends on depth, location, skin type and aftercare.
How long does a mole removal mark stay pink?
The crust usually settles within about 3 to 7 days, but a pink or slightly darker mark can last for weeks to a few months, especially on the body. Gradual fading over that period is normal.
How can I minimize a mole removal scar?
Leave the crust alone, keep the site clean as instructed, use sun protection once the skin has closed, and avoid rubbing or friction on the spot. Choosing a removal depth that suits the mole also matters, which is decided at examination.
When should I get a mole removal scar checked?
Come back if the site becomes increasingly red, swollen, hot or painful, discharges pus, keeps bleeding, or if colour reappears inside the mark months later. Those signs need a doctor to look at it.
Can an old mole removal scar be improved?
Sometimes. A small dent or uneven texture from an older removal may be discussed with treatments such as Fraxel or subcision, depending on its depth and size. That is decided after examination.
