Worried the lip filler recovery stages won't fit between your appointment and your flight home? Read this before you pick a treatment day. You'll know what each stage looks like, what shifts the cost, what reviews get right and which methods suit a short trip, so you can choose a day that fits your lips and your budget.
Hello, I'm Dr. Hyunji Kim, Director and Lead Physician at Delphic Clinic in Gangnam, and a member of the Korean Filler Society.
Our doctors do the treatments themselves, interpreters are on site for English and Chinese, and we're open until 21:00 on weekdays, so an evening appointment can fit around a sightseeing day.
I hear this question often in the consultation room, and the mistake behind it is usually the same: people judge their lips on day 2, when swelling is close to its peak.
For many people, swelling peaks within the first 48 hours, falls sharply by day 4 or 5, and the shape settles near two weeks. If you want most of the swelling behind you before you board, leave about four nights between treatment and flight.
If your dates are tight, send a front-facing photo of your lips and your flight date on WhatsApp, and ask which treatment day you should aim for.

What happens at each of the lip filler recovery stages?
Swelling, bruising and tenderness arrive first, then ease in a fairly predictable order over about two weeks. The table shows the usual pattern for hyaluronic acid filler in the lips, and your own timing can run a few days either way.
Day 2 looks worse than day 0 for two reasons. The needle passes set off an inflammatory response that builds over the first day or so, and hyaluronic acid holds water. Lips are also soft, blood-rich tissue, so a small amount of fluid shows.
The shape you see on the evening of day 2 isn't the shape you'll live with. Unless something is medically wrong, that is the wrong moment to add filler or dissolve it.
Which stage will you be in when you fly?
Count the nights between treatment and departure, because that number tells you which row of the stage table you'll carry on board. Trip length matters less than where the appointment falls inside it.
Say you land on a Saturday and fly home the following Friday morning. We're closed on Sundays and open until 21:00 on weekdays, so you could ask for a Monday evening slot. Tuesday and Wednesday become your puffy days, which suit a museum and a face mask. On the Friday flight you'd be at day 4, usually with most of the swelling gone and perhaps a yellowing bruise under concealer.
I don't know of an agreed medical waiting period before flying after lip filler. My reason for leaving a gap is practical. The first couple of days are when you'd most want to be close to the people who treated you.

4.7 · 260 Google reviewsI received ONDA lifting and Juvelook Skin treatment at Delpic Clinic. Before the procedure, Dr. K carefully examined my skin condition and explained everything in a kind and easy-to-understand way, which made me feel very comfortable and reassured. During the treatment, I could really tell that Dr. K was highly skilled, so I felt confident and at ease throughout the entire process. Overall, I was very satisfied with my experience. It’s definitely a clinic I would love to visit again.
I had a really great experience at Delphic Clinic. The staff were very friendly and made me feel comfortable from the moment I walked in. They explained everything clearly in English and didn’t try to oversell unnecessary treatments, which I really appreciated. The clinic is very clean and modern, and the whole process felt professional and well-organized. Overall, I would definitely recommend this clinic, especially if you’re a foreigner looking for a trustworthy place in Korea.

Aftercare for each stage, in Seoul and back home
Nothing makes swelling vanish, but a few habits can keep it from getting worse. These are general measures, and any instructions from your treating doctor come first.
- First 24 hours: use a cold compress wrapped in cloth in short spells, and keep your fingers off your lips.
- First 48 hours: sleep with your head raised, and skip alcohol, hard exercise, saunas and the jjimjilbang.
- Days 3 to 14: leave firm spots alone unless a doctor has told you to massage them.
- Before you leave Seoul: write down the product name and the amount injected, so a doctor at home has them.
Bruising deserves a word before the appointment, not after it. A review in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology on minimizing bruising after injectables points to aspirin, anti-inflammatory painkillers and supplements such as fish oil and vitamin E as things that can raise the risk. Don't stop anything prescribed for you without asking the doctor who prescribed it.
If you get cold sores, say so before treatment. Lip injections can set one off, often in the first few days, and your doctor may want to plan for that. I go deeper into daily care in my longer lip filler aftercare guide.
Which signs don't belong to any stage?
Pain that keeps getting worse, skin that turns pale or blotchy, and any change in your vision are outside the normal pattern. Use the check below on any day of your recovery, in your hotel or at home.
Risks and side effects to know
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration lists bruising, redness, swelling, pain and tenderness among the common side effects of dermal fillers. They usually fade within the two-week arc above. It also warns about rare but serious injury when filler enters a blood vessel.
- Both lips swollen, one a little more than the other: expected in the first days.
- A bruise changing color and not spreading: expected.
- Pain easing day by day: expected.
- White, grey, blue or mottled skin, or pain that climbs instead of easing: contact a doctor the same day, without waiting for the morning.
- Vision changes, or weakness on one side of the body: go to an emergency department.
- Heat, spreading redness or fever, or a tender lump appearing weeks later: see a doctor soon, since this can point to infection or a delayed reaction.
- Tingling and small blisters: likely a cold sore, so ask a doctor about treatment early.
If any of this happens after you've flown, show a local doctor the product name and amount you noted. Hyaluronic acid filler can generally be dissolved with an enzyme, so a doctor at home has options. The CDC's medical tourism guidance advises arranging follow-up care with a provider at home before you travel, and that applies to a small procedure as well.
When I'd tell you to skip lip filler on this trip
Some trips and some lips are a poor match for filler, and saying so costs you nothing. I'd hold off in these situations:
- Your flight or a major event is less than three nights away.
- You have an active cold sore, or an infection or inflammation on or around the lips.
- You're pregnant or breastfeeding, or you've had an allergic reaction to the filler's ingredients or to local anesthetic.
- You take blood thinners and haven't spoken with your prescribing doctor.
- You're unhappy with lip dryness or fine lines and have no wish for more volume, since filler adds volume and may not address those concerns.
What do reviews get right about recovery?
Reviews tend to describe real sensations and then draw the wrong conclusion from them. Three claims come up again and again, and they're worth sorting.
"The swelling was gone in 24 hours" can be true for a very small amount, but it isn't the usual course. Planning a trip around it is how people end up puffy in their farewell photos.
"Lumps mean it was botched" is too quick. Small firm spots are common in the first week or two and usually soften. A lump that stays past the settling stage, or one that is painful, deserves a doctor's look.
"A bruise means a bad injector" doesn't hold either. Lips have many small blood vessels, and bruises can follow careful technique. "Just massage it out" is the one I'd ignore outright unless your own doctor told you to, because pressing newly placed filler can move it.
Which methods change how the recovery goes?
The amount injected and the product both shape the stages above. Our menu lists Rejuviel among fillers for the lips, and you can ask what suits your lips when you come in.
Generally, less volume means less swelling. A smaller first amount also leaves room to add later, though adding means another visit after the two-week mark, which matters if you live far away. Needle and blunt cannula techniques each have their own bruising and swelling trade-offs, so it's reasonable to ask which one is planned for you and why.
Hyaluronic acid is the usual choice in lips, partly because it can be dissolved. A collagen stimulator such as PLLA works on a much slower timeline and generally isn't a lip product. I explain the difference in what a collagen stimulator can and can't do.
What decides the cost for a short trip?
The figure for your lips comes down to a handful of choices, and recovery touches several of them.
- Product: different fillers are priced differently.
- Amount: how many cc your lips need for the shape you want.
- One session or two: a planned touch-up after two weeks may mean a second visit, and for you that can mean a second trip.
- Past filler: whether anything already there needs attention first.
- VAT: our menu prices don't include it, so check that any figure you compare is on the same basis.
- Days in Seoul: each extra night you add for recovery goes on your own travel budget.
Korean and international patients pay the same price here. Our treatment menu and location are on Delphic Clinic's English site, and I've written separately about what a lip filler price in Seoul covers. For your own figure, ask on WhatsApp what the amount you have in mind would cost for your lips.
We offer a consultation, so your first message can be small: one photo is enough, along with the question you're least sure about, such as whether a past cold sore changes your timing. Interpreters are on site for English and Chinese, and we're directly connected to Exit 3 of Sinnonhyeon Station. When you come in, the doctor examines your lips and recommends the amount and timing that fit. WhatsApp is the place to start.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fly the day after getting lip filler?
I don't know of an agreed medical rule against it, but you'd board with swelling near its peak and be far from the doctor who treated you during the first couple of days. About four nights is a more comfortable gap.
Is it normal for one lip to swell more than the other?
Yes, in the first days. The upper and lower lip often swell differently, and one side can look larger until the swelling settles. Wait until about two weeks to judge symmetry, unless you have worsening pain or skin color changes.
When can a lip filler touch-up be done?
Doctors commonly wait until swelling has settled, which is around two weeks or later. Adding sooner means judging the shape while it is still changing.
When can I wear lipstick again?
Many doctors suggest waiting about a day, until the needle marks have closed, and using clean products. Follow what your treating doctor tells you, since it can differ with bruising or skin reactions.
