Will your lips still look swollen when you board the plane home, and are there lip filler recovery tips that actually shorten that window? Read this before you pick the day you book. By the end you'll know what each of the first fourteen days usually looks like, what review threads get right and wrong, which methods change the swelling, and what decides the cost, so you can choose a treatment day that fits your trip and your budget.
Hello, I'm Dr. Hyunji Kim, Director and Lead Physician at Delphic Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul. My career includes Korea University Medical Center, and I'm a member of the Korean Filler Society. “How swollen will I be on the flight?” is one of the first things people ask me about lips.
At Delphic, the doctor performs the treatment, same-day treatment is possible, and Korean and international patients pay the same price. English and Chinese interpreters are on staff, and we're open until 21:00 on weekdays.
I wrote this because a common planning mistake is booking lips for the last full day of a trip, which puts the flight right where swelling usually peaks.
Lip swelling is usually most noticeable in the first one to three days, bruises can take about a week to fade, and the shape usually settles by around two weeks. If you can, have your lips done early in the trip and keep a few calm days before you fly.
If you're still choosing the day, send a daylight photo of your lips, front and side, on WhatsApp with your arrival and departure dates, and ask the one thing you need settled: which day leaves enough room before your flight.

What do days 1 to 14 usually look like?
Lips swell more than most of the face. They're full of small blood vessels, the tissue is soft and loose, and every needle pass is a small injury the body answers with fluid. Hyaluronic acid filler also holds water, so your lips look fuller in the first days than they will once things calm down.
This is the schedule I'd plan a trip around. Read the days as typical, since bruising in particular varies a lot between people.
The last row matters most. On day 2 many people think one side is bigger, because swelling is rarely symmetrical. The time to judge the shape is around two weeks, which is also why the first week of a trip is the right place for lips.
Lip filler recovery tips for the first 72 hours
- Use cold compresses wrapped in a cloth, in short stretches, on the first day. Ice straight on the skin can hurt it.
- Sleep with your head a little raised for the first night or two.
- Skip alcohol and hard exercise for at least 24 to 48 hours. Both raise blood flow, and blood flow feeds swelling.
- Stay out of saunas, a jjimjilbang, hot yoga and hot springs for a few days. Heat makes swelling worse, and Seoul makes saunas easy to wander into.
- Don't press, pinch or massage your lips unless the doctor who treated you tells you to.
- Leave lipstick and lip liner until the next day, so the entry points can close first.
- If you take blood thinners for a medical reason, don't stop them on your own. Tell the doctor at your consultation instead.
- If you get cold sores, say so before treatment. Injections into the lips can trigger a flare in people who are prone to them.
Most of these come down to keeping heat and blood flow low while the tissue settles. None of them makes swelling vanish overnight. They make it smaller and shorter.
Can you fly home the day after lip filler?
Usually you can, medically. Cabin pressure isn't known to move hyaluronic acid filler, and the common side effects the U.S. FDA lists for fillers (bruising, redness, swelling, pain, tenderness, itching) don't change because you're on a plane. Cabin air is dry, so carry a plain lip balm and drink water.
The reason I care about the gap before your flight is different. The rare serious problem with filler, a blocked blood vessel, usually shows itself during the injection or in the hours and days right after. I'd much rather you were a short subway ride from the clinic during that window than ten hours into a flight.
Say you land at Incheon on a Thursday night and fly home the following Thursday. You could come in on Friday evening and, if it suits you, have the treatment the same day. Hours and directions are on Delphic Clinic's English homepage. Saturday and Sunday are your puffiest days, which makes them good for markets and galleries rather than dinners you want photographed. By Tuesday most of the swelling is usually down, and the flight sits a week after treatment.
Now change one thing: same trip, but you book Wednesday because the first days filled up. You'd fly at the height of the swelling, and any question about how it's settling would have to be answered from home. In that case I'd suggest a smaller amount, or leaving lips for the next trip.

4.7 · 260 Google reviewsI received ONDA lifting and Juvelook Skin treatment at Delpic Clinic. Before the procedure, Dr. K carefully examined my skin condition and explained everything in a kind and easy-to-understand way, which made me feel very comfortable and reassured. During the treatment, I could really tell that Dr. K was highly skilled, so I felt confident and at ease throughout the entire process. Overall, I was very satisfied with my experience. It’s definitely a clinic I would love to visit again.
I had a really great experience at Delphic Clinic. The staff were very friendly and made me feel comfortable from the moment I walked in. They explained everything clearly in English and didn’t try to oversell unnecessary treatments, which I really appreciated. The clinic is very clean and modern, and the whole process felt professional and well-organized. Overall, I would definitely recommend this clinic, especially if you’re a foreigner looking for a trustworthy place in Korea.
If your schedule is fixed, write down which filler you've had in your lips before and roughly when, send that on WhatsApp, and ask whether the number of days you'll have after treatment is enough.

What do review threads get right about lip filler swelling?
Forum and review threads about lips repeat a handful of claims. Some hold up medically and some don't.
“Day 2 looks like a duck, then it calms down.” Mostly true. Peak swelling in the first couple of days is common and expected.
“The bruise showed up the next day.” Also true. Bruises often appear or darken a day after treatment, then fade over about a week.
“If you feel lumps in the first week, it went wrong.” Usually not. Firm spots in the first days are often swelling or filler that hasn't settled, and many soften within two weeks. A lump still there after that is worth showing to a doctor, and with hyaluronic acid filler, dissolving it is an option. I go through lumps, migration and overfilling in what to do when lip filler goes wrong.
“Massage hard to even it out.” Not on your own. Massage helps in some cases, but only when the injector shows you where and how.
“I could see my final result the same day.” No. What you see on day 0 includes swelling and the numbing effect. For the longer arc of healing, see my lip filler recovery and aftercare guide.
Methods that change how much swelling you get
How much your lips swell isn't fully in your control, but a few choices at the appointment move it.
Volume is the biggest one. A smaller amount in the first session means less swelling and an easier flight, and you can add more on a later trip once you know how your lips respond. Where the filler goes matters too: shaping the border of the lip and adding body to the lip itself recover differently. I explain how I weigh those in how I plan lip shape and volume.
Technique is the other. Injectors use either a fine needle or a blunt cannula, and each has trade-offs for bruising and precision, so ask which one would be used for your lips and why. Many hyaluronic acid fillers made for lips also contain a local anesthetic, which makes the injection more comfortable but adds to the numb, puffy feeling for the first hour or two.
If old filler is still in your lips and sits unevenly, dissolving it before adding more is a separate step with its own wait. That can change how many days you need in Seoul.
When lip filler shouldn't happen on this trip
Lip filler isn't for every trip, or every person.
- Wait if you have a cold sore, a cut or any infection on or around your lips.
- Skip it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Mention any allergy to filler ingredients or local anesthetics, since that can rule it out.
- Many doctors advise a gap between lip filler and dental work, so mention any dental appointment around your trip.
- Leave lips for another trip if your flight or a big event is within a day or two and you'd mind visible swelling.
You may not need filler at all. If what bothers you is dry, flaky lips or fine vertical lines on lips that already have the volume you like, a daily lip balm and a lip product with SPF may be all you need for now.
Which warning signs after lip filler need a doctor today?
Risks and side effects to know
The common reactions are swelling, bruising, tenderness and a few firm spots, mostly settling over days to two weeks. Less often, people get a cold sore flare, an infection, or a lump that stays.
The rare serious one is filler blocking a blood vessel. The FDA lists this among the risks of dermal fillers, and it can lead to skin damage and, very rarely, vision problems. Watch for skin on or around the lip turning pale, grey-blue or blotchy, pain much stronger than the rest of the area, or any change in your vision. Those need a doctor the same day, and a vision change means an emergency room.
If something comes up once you're home, see your local doctor or urgent care first for anything that can't wait, and send photos on WhatsApp too. The CDC's advice for medical travelers is to arrange follow-up care at home before you leave and to carry your treatment records. So ask for the product name and amount in writing before you fly, and keep them on your phone. Whether filler suits your lips at all is decided when the doctor examines you.
What decides the cost of lip filler on your trip
- The amount of filler your lips need, and whether it's split over two sessions
- The filler product chosen for your lips
- Whether earlier filler needs dissolving first
- Whether you add another treatment on the same day
Korean and international patients pay the same price at Delphic. For what each line on a lip filler quote covers, see what the price of lip filler in Seoul actually covers. For your own figure, ask on WhatsApp what it would cost for your lips, naming the amount you have in mind.
Before you lock in flights, send a daylight photo of your lips on WhatsApp with your travel dates, and ask one question: is my gap before the flight long enough for the swelling I'm likely to have? When you come in, I'll examine your lips and recommend an amount and a day that fit your trip.
Frequently asked questions
When can I kiss or drink from a straw after lip filler?
Many doctors suggest waiting about a day for both, because pressure and suction on fresh injection points can add bruising and soreness. Keep it gentle for the first few days after that.
Is it a problem if one lip looks bigger on day 2?
Usually not. Swelling is rarely even on both sides, so the shape is best judged at around two weeks. If it still looks uneven then, show the doctor who treated you.
How long does lip filler last?
Hyaluronic acid filler in the lips often lasts several months to around a year. Lips move constantly, so they tend to sit toward the shorter end, and the product and amount used also play a part.
Will my lips feel numb after treatment?
If a numbing cream or a filler containing a local anesthetic is used, numbness usually wears off within an hour or two. Avoid hot drinks until feeling returns so you don't burn your lips.
Can I have lip filler on my first full day in Seoul?
If you feel well after the flight, there's no medical reason against it, and same-day treatment is possible at Delphic. An early day gives you the most time for swelling to settle before you fly home.
