Lip filler how long for swelling to go down: is that the question holding up your Seoul itinerary, because you don't want puffy lips in your trip photos or on the flight home? Read this before you pick the day. You'll come away knowing how lip swelling usually moves day by day, what reviews get right and wrong about it, which methods change it, and what decides the cost. Then you can choose a trip day and an amount that fit your plans and your budget.
Hello, I'm Dr. Hyunji Kim, Director · Lead Physician at Delphic Clinic in Gangnam. My background is Korea University Medical Center, and I'm a member of the Korean Filler Society. People planning lip filler around a Seoul trip tend to ask about swelling before they ask about anything else.
A few facts about the clinic matter for this question. A doctor performs your injection, and the consultation and the treatment can happen on the same day. Foreign patients pay the same price as Korean patients, an English interpreter is on staff, and we're open until 21:00 on weekdays, right at Exit 3 of Sinnonhyeon Station.
I wrote this because the planning mistake that costs people most is booking lip filler on the last day of a trip, or the day before the photos they care about. That is usually when the swelling is at its largest.
For most people, lip swelling is biggest in the first 24 to 48 hours, most of the visible puffiness settles within three to five days, and the shape you'll keep shows at around two weeks. Plan at least three clear days between the injection and anything you want to look settled for.

I had a really great experience at Delphic Clinic. The staff were very friendly and made me feel comfortable from the moment I walked in. They explained everything clearly in English and didn’t try to oversell unnecessary treatments, which I really appreciated. The clinic is very clean and modern, and the whole process felt professional and well-organized. Overall, I would definitely recommend this clinic, especially if you’re a foreigner looking for a trustworthy place in Korea.

Lip filler how long for swelling to go down: the day-by-day answer
Two things swell your lips after filler. The first is the injection itself. Lips are soft and full of small blood vessels, and they react to every needle pass with fluid and sometimes a bruise. The second is the gel. Hyaluronic acid holds water, so in the first days the filler and the tissue around it look bigger than they will once everything settles.
In the first few hours, the numbing is still working, so your lips feel heavy and a little stiff. They already look fuller than the final result, and you may see small needle marks.
Day one and day two are the peak for many people. Your lips can look uneven, the upper lip may sit further forward than you planned, and they're often puffiest right after you wake up, because fluid collects while you lie flat.
By days three to five, most of the visible swelling goes down. A bruise turns yellow-green and fades, and strangers usually stop noticing. Around day seven, most people look settled in photos and in conversation, though the lips can still feel firmer than usual when you press them.
Around two weeks, the filler has integrated and softened. This is the point to judge the shape and size, and on a short trip it usually arrives after you're home. A first treatment, a larger amount or a tendency to bruise can stretch each stage by a day or two. The American Academy of Dermatology and the US Food and Drug Administration both list swelling and bruising among the common side effects of fillers.
A planning table for your Seoul days
Use this to place the appointment on your itinerary. Count from the day of the injection.
Keep the clinic hours in mind. We're open Monday to Friday 10:30–21:00 and Saturday 10:30–17:00, and closed on Sundays. A weekday evening slot lets you sightsee all day and have the injection afterward. A Saturday appointment puts your first heavy-swelling day on a Sunday, when we're closed. Hours and directions are also on the Delphic Clinic homepage.

Where the injection fits in a six-day trip
Say you land at Incheon on a Tuesday morning, fly home the following Monday, and the photos you care about are at a Saturday dinner. Tuesday is jet lag, and I'd leave it alone. Wednesday works: the consultation and the injection that afternoon or evening, puffy lips on Thursday and Friday while you're in museums, and by Saturday night you're on day three. That's usually enough for dinner-table photos, though not always for close-up portraits. Monday's flight lands on day five.
Now take the same trip, but you want the injection on Saturday so the result is "fresh" for your last days. I'd talk you out of that. You'd board the plane near the peak, and if something looked off on Sunday, we'd be closed.
If you'd like a second look before you leave, ask at booking whether a short recheck fits your dates. The last stretch of settling happens at home either way, which is why I go through what to watch for in my lip filler recovery and aftercare guide.
What do lip filler reviews get right about swelling?
Read enough review threads and the same few claims come up. Some hold up medically and some don't.
"Day two is the worst." Mostly true. Swelling usually builds overnight and is at its largest somewhere between the first and second morning.
"My lips are lopsided, it's ruined." In the first few days this is usually uneven swelling, because one side took more needle passes or bruised more. I'd wait two weeks before judging symmetry. A firm lump or a clear difference that's still there after two weeks is worth having examined, and I cover how those are handled in lumps, uneven lips and when dissolving is the answer.
"Ice makes it go down overnight." Ice wrapped in cloth, a few minutes at a time, helps a little on the first day. It won't erase day-two swelling.
"Flying makes filler move." I'm not aware of good evidence that cabin pressure shifts hyaluronic acid filler. Dry cabin air and salty airport food can make your lips feel puffier for a few hours. When filler drifts above the lip line over months, the usual reasons are the amount and where it was placed.
"More filler, more swelling." Generally true, and that leads straight to the methods.
Which methods change how swollen you get?
The amount matters most. A first treatment with a modest amount usually swells less and settles sooner than trying to reach your final size in one visit. When a trip is short, I'd rather place less and leave room to add more on a later trip.
Where the filler goes matters too. Defining the border of the lip tends to show swelling as a raised ridge for a few days, while adding volume to the body of the lip usually looks rounder and more even as it settles. I describe how I balance the two in how I plan lip shape with Korean lip filler.
Doctors use either a fine needle or a blunt cannula for lips. A cannula usually means fewer entry points and, for some people, less bruising. A needle gives finer control at the border. Neither removes swelling, and the choice follows what your lips need.
What decides the cost of lip filler for your case?
Four things move it. The amount, counted in cc, is the largest factor. The product comes next, and the menu lists more than one hyaluronic acid filler. Your history matters too: older filler that has drifted sometimes has to be dissolved before anything new goes in, and that's a separate step. Finally, adding another area or treatment in the same visit changes the total.
Being a foreigner doesn't change it, because foreign patients pay the same price as Korean patients. If you're thinking about fitting a small skin treatment into the same visit, how mole removal cost in Korea is worked out follows the same per-case logic.
To get the figure for your own lips, ask on WhatsApp what it would cost for your case. Include a side-profile photo and a note of any filler you've had before, with the product and month if you know them.
Risks, and when lip filler doesn't suit this trip
The common effects are temporary: swelling, bruising, tenderness, and small bumps you can feel that usually soften over the first weeks. If you get cold sores, a flare in the days after the injection is possible. These typically last from a few days to around two weeks.
The rare but serious risk is filler entering a blood vessel. The FDA lists this among the risks of dermal fillers, because it can damage the skin and, very rarely, affect vision. The warning signs appear soon after the injection: skin turning white, severe or worsening pain, or a dusky, blotchy patch. That needs treatment immediately.
As general medicine, these are reasons to wait or skip lip filler on this trip:
- an active cold sore, infection or broken skin on or around the lips
- pregnancy or breastfeeding
- a known allergy to hyaluronic acid filler or to the numbing agent
- blood-thinning medication (talk to the doctor who prescribed it first, and don't stop it on your own)
- dental work planned in the same two weeks
If you have a history of cold sores, say so before the injection, because preventive antiviral medicine is sometimes used.
You also don't need lip filler if what bothers you is dryness or flaking; that's lip care. And if you've never had filler and the event you care about is two days after landing, I'd save it for a trip with more room. Results vary between people, and whether filler suits you is decided when a doctor examines your lips in person.
What should you do if something feels wrong after you fly home?
Before you leave Seoul, ask for the product name and the amount in writing and keep them on your phone. The US CDC's medical tourism guidance is to carry copies of your records and to arrange follow-up care at home before you travel.
If you notice the urgent signs above, go straight to an emergency department and show them the product name. For slower worries, like a bump that hasn't softened by two weeks, take daylight photos from the front and the side and have it checked by a local doctor, or send the photos on WhatsApp along with the date of your injection.
You can start with a consultation before you book anything: send one front photo of your lips and your travel dates on WhatsApp, with the one question that worries you most, whether that's the flight, a dinner or a photo day. An English interpreter is on staff, and you'll find us at Exit 3 of Sinnonhyeon Station. When you come in, I'll examine your lips and recommend the amount and the trip day that fit your plans.
Frequently asked questions
Is it okay to fly the day after lip filler?
For hyaluronic acid filler, flying the next day is generally fine. Your lips may feel puffier during the flight because of dry cabin air and salty food, so drink water and skip salty snacks. Most people prefer not to fly at the peak, so leave a few days if you can.
How long does bruising from lip filler last?
A lip filler bruise often fades over a few days to about a week, turning yellow-green as it goes. Bruising tends to last longer than the swelling, so if photos matter, plan around the bruise as well.
Can I have a drink with dinner on the night of the injection?
Alcohol can increase swelling and bruising, so many doctors suggest skipping it for about a day after lip filler. Save the celebratory dinner for day two or three.
Should I massage my lips if they look uneven in the first few days?
Not unless the doctor who treated you asks you to. Early unevenness is usually swelling, and pressing on it can make the tenderness worse. Judge symmetry at around two weeks.
Do foreigners pay more for lip filler at Delphic Clinic?
No. Foreign patients pay the same price as Korean patients. To find out what your own treatment would cost, ask on WhatsApp with a photo of your lips and a note of any previous filler.
