When you ask “lip filler how long does swelling last,” are you really asking whether your lips will look like your own again before you board the flight home? Read this before you fix the appointment date. You'll know how swelling usually runs day by day, what reviews get right and wrong about it, which methods change it, and what decides the cost, so you can choose a treatment day that fits your trip and your budget.
Hello, I'm Dr. Hyunji Kim, Director and Lead Physician at Delphic Clinic in Gangnam. My background is Korea University Medical Center, I'm a member of the Korean Filler Society, and the swelling question is one I hear often in the consultation room from people fitting filler around a flight.
At Delphic, a doctor performs the treatment and same-day treatment is possible, which matters when your days in Seoul are counted. We're open until 9 p.m. on weekdays, right at Exit 3 of Sinnonhyeon Station, with interpreters on site so you can ask about treatment and price in English.
I wrote this because people often book lip filler on the last full day of a trip, then spend the flight home behind a mask when two or three more days would have covered the worst of it.
Swelling after lip filler usually peaks in the first two to three days, has mostly eased by about a week, and the final shape settles at around two weeks. Bruising, if you get any, can take a week or so to fade. For a trip, that means treatment early and the flight late.
If you're still choosing the day, send a front-facing photo of your lips in daylight and your flight-home date on WhatsApp, with the one question you care about most, such as “Is five days enough?” Putting your own dates in the message keeps the question about your trip instead of an average.

Lip filler how long does swelling last: the day-by-day picture
Most of what you'll read online collapses this into one number. It really runs in stages, and only the first few days are the part people notice across a dinner table.
Two things cause the swelling. The needle or cannula makes small injuries the tissue reacts to, and hyaluronic acid filler holds water, so the area takes on extra fluid in the first days. Lips are soft, mobile and full of small blood vessels, which is why they swell more than a cheek or chin treated with the same amount.
Expect it to look worse in the morning. Fluid collects in the face while you sleep flat, and by late morning it usually eases. The upper and lower lips also swell at different rates, so a lopsided look on day two is usually swelling rather than uneven filler. How long your own swelling lasts depends on your tissue and the amount used.
What do reviews get right about lip swelling, and what do they get wrong?
Review threads about lip filler repeat a handful of claims. Some hold up medically and some don't.
“Day two is the worst.” Mostly true. Swelling tends to build overnight after treatment and peak somewhere in the first 48 to 72 hours, so the morning after is often bigger than the evening of.
“Lumpy on day three means the injector made a mistake.” Not necessarily. In the first week the filler hasn't settled into the tissue and swelling is patchy, so small bumps you can feel are common. Lumps still there at two weeks are worth a conversation, and a hard, painful, pale or dusky patch at any time is a different matter, covered below.
“Ice it and you'll be fine by morning.” Partly. Cold compresses in short sessions help comfort and take the edge off swelling, but they don't skip the peak. “Bruising means a bad injector.” No. Lips have many small vessels and bruising can happen with careful technique; it's more likely if you take medicines or supplements that thin the blood.
Which methods make you swell less?
How the filler goes in changes the first week more than people expect. A fine needle places filler precisely, especially along the lip border, while a blunt cannula goes in through fewer entry points and may bruise less in some areas. Many injectors use both, and it's reasonable to ask which one will be used for your lips and why.
Amount matters most. A small volume with fewer passes generally swells less than a large correction in one sitting. The filler's firmness plays a part too: softer products for the body of the lip, firmer ones for defining the border. If older filler is still in place, it may need assessing or dissolving first, which brings its own swelling.
For a first lip treatment on a short trip, I'd rather place less and leave room to add later than reach the final volume in one session. Sometimes thin lips aren't the main issue at all: a recessed chin or flat midface can make lips look smaller, which is the thinking behind planning filler around facial proportion. If shape is your main question, I've written about how I plan a soft lip shape that suits the face.
Which day of your Seoul trip should you book?
Say you're 48, your upper lip has thinned over the past few years, you've never had filler, and you're in Seoul for seven days before a family dinner at home the weekend after you land. I'd want you treated on day one or two. That puts the peak swelling on your sightseeing days, leaves four or five days for it to ease before the flight, and brings you home in the settling week.
Now take the same trip, but you can only come on day six. I'd suggest a smaller amount or holding off, because you'd fly at the peak and be far from the person who treated you if a question comes up.
Our hours shape the plan. We're open Monday to Friday from 10:30 to 21:00 and Saturday from 10:30 to 17:00, and closed on Sundays. If you land on a Saturday evening, Monday is your earliest day, and a weekday evening appointment keeps your daytime free for the trip.
Flying a few days after lip filler isn't usually a problem in itself. The real cost of booking late is distance: the US CDC's medical tourism guidance suggests planning follow-up care at home and carrying records of what was done before you travel.
If you've had lip filler before, add when it was done and a side-view photo of your lips to your WhatsApp message. Filler that hasn't fully broken down changes how much room there is and how much you're likely to swell, so it's the detail most worth including.

What decides the cost of lip filler for your case?
Four things move the figure. The product: the menu on Delphic Clinic's English site lists filler by product and by the cc, and some options note which areas they cover. The amount: how many cc your lips need for the change you want. Old filler: if earlier filler needs dissolving first, that's a separate step. And anything else you add on the same day.
Prices on our menu are in KRW with VAT not included, and they're the same for locals and foreigners, with no foreigner surcharge. Ask on WhatsApp what it would cost for your case, and say roughly how much change you're after.
Risks and side effects to know before you fly
Swelling, tenderness, redness, bruising and small firm bumps are the usual temporary reactions, and most fade within one to two weeks. The FDA's dermal filler page lists bruising, redness, swelling, pain, tenderness and itching among common side effects, and warns that filler injected into a blood vessel, though rare, can damage skin and affect vision.
Who should wait or skip it: anyone with an active cold sore or infection on or near the lips (if you get cold sores, mention it, because filler can trigger a flare); pregnancy or breastfeeding; a known allergy to hyaluronic acid filler or lidocaine; and blood-thinning medication, which raises the chance of bruising, though you shouldn't stop a prescribed medicine on your own. If your event is within three days, wait for another trip.
After you're home, pain that gets worse instead of better, skin that turns pale, blotchy, purple or gray, or any change in your vision needs urgent care straight away at a local emergency service; don't wait to message anyone. For lumps or uneven shape still there at two weeks, take daylight photos and get in touch; I've written separately about lumps, migration and when dissolving is the answer. Keep a note of the product and amount injected so a doctor at home knows what's in your lips.
When is lip filler the wrong call?
If what bothers you is fine vertical lines around the mouth rather than lip volume, filling the lip itself won't fix it. If your lips mostly feel dry and cracked, that's a skin-care problem first. If any visible swelling at all would spoil the trip, a visit with a full week to spare is the better time. And if what you're really after is overall skin brightness, read what a glutathione IV drip can and can't do before booking either.

I had a really great experience at Delphic Clinic. The staff were very friendly and made me feel comfortable from the moment I walked in. They explained everything clearly in English and didn’t try to oversell unnecessary treatments, which I really appreciated. The clinic is very clean and modern, and the whole process felt professional and well-organized. Overall, I would definitely recommend this clinic, especially if you’re a foreigner looking for a trustworthy place in Korea.
When you're ready, send one front photo of your lips and your flight-home date on WhatsApp, and ask the question that decides it for you, whether that's timing, amount or cost. It starts with a consultation, interpreters are on site in English and Chinese, and you'll find us at Exit 3 of Sinnonhyeon Station. When you come in, I'll examine your lips and recommend the amount and timing that fit your face and your days in Seoul.

Frequently asked questions
Can I fly the day after lip filler?
Flying itself isn't usually the issue. The day after is close to peak swelling, and you'd be leaving before the first week has passed, so if you can, leave four or five days between treatment and your flight.
Why do my lips look bigger in the morning?
Fluid collects in the face while you sleep lying flat, so the first few mornings tend to look puffier. Sleeping with your head slightly raised helps, and it usually eases by late morning.
When can I judge whether I like the result?
At around two weeks. Before that, swelling and filler that hasn't settled yet can make lips look larger or uneven, so judging on day three often leads to the wrong conclusion.
Can I combine lip filler with another treatment the same day?
Same-day treatment is possible at Delphic. Adding more treatments to the face on the same day can add to swelling, so mention everything you're considering when you ask about timing.
Do foreigners pay more for lip filler at Delphic?
No. Prices are the same for locals and foreigners, with no foreigner surcharge. Menu prices are in KRW and exclude VAT; ask on WhatsApp what your own case would cost.
